Thrifters Helping Thrifters

1a-boatkids-graphicsfairy002cI just had to share this story.  Today I went to Goodwill for their half off sale.  I only got some stuff to use for moving, nothing special.  Anyway, while looking at some stuff on a cart I overheard a woman talking on her phone.  She was asking about ideas for a wedding shower gift.  Apparently it was today and she needed an inexpensive last minute gift.  At that moment I spotted a beautiful pair of wine glasses that were on sale for $1 each and just screamed wedding to me.  I handed them to her and asked if they’d work then walked away grinning to myself about what a great thing I did.  I overheard her tell the person on the phone how great the glasses were.  What was really cool was when I went to check out and ran into her again, she thanked me for finding the glasses since they were perfect.  Yay!  I helped someone.  That’s one of the great things about thrift stores, most of the shoppers are willing to help out other shoppers.  That’s probably why I didn’t really hesitate to help her, I have been helped by others in the past so it’s returning the favor.  Now if only people did that more in other stores, the world would be a friendlier place.

Moon Cosmic Power!

Any Sailor Moons fans?  Found this cute game thing online, a Sailor Senshi Maker.  It let’s you create your own sailor scout and customize it to your liking.  It’s really fun.  Here’s the one I made.

Not too bad for a first try, but I think it looks too much like Sailor Moon.  Still cute though.  I’ll try again later.

More Ways to Wear a T-shirt

I can’t believe it’s been a whole week since the last time I posted anything, well maybe I can.  It is on the calendar and all.  Still, it’s depressing to think about it. Sad smile

PICT0005 (3)

Enough of that, I managed to find time late last night to do this.  It’s an ordinary Hanes t-shirt, or at least it was and ordinary t-shirt.  I cut the bottom off to shorten it and then cut the neckline to make it more flattering.  I accidently cut too much off the neckline, so I had to take it up at the shoulders.  Otherwise I would have ended up showing too much of my “charm”.  I added eyelet lace down the front and threaded thin ribbon through the “eyes” for a laced up effect.  Then I finished it with more ribbon threaded through the hems of the sleeves for a gathered look.  Super easy thanks to the help of a large needle for the ribbon.  Now all that’s left is ironing it, or at least trying to iron.  For some reason everything always seems to look more wrinkled after I iron them.  Wonder why?

Here’s the updated list:

  • Case
  • Skirt
  • Pink Dress
  • Cat dress
  • Altered t-shirt
  • kit
  • bunka doll

Four down, three to go.  Got to keep at it.

Valentines for Valentine’s

As promised yesterday, here are the lovely valentines my sister made for her daughter to give to her class.

PICT0005 (2)My sister cut various sized hearts from felt and glued them together in layers.  My niece wrote the names of the recipients on the back all by herself.  It was my niece’s idea to make blue and pink ones, blue for boys and pink for girls.  I wonder where she gets ideas like that?

Pink and Chocolate Stains

PICT0002 (4)
Managed to finish this dress last night and I wore it to church.  I think it’s perfect for a Valentine’s day theme especially with the scallop edge, notice I’m wearing one of those heart pins I made (see Pretty in Pink).  I gave them to some people in my Sunday school class.  Speaking of class valentines, my sister has been working all day on cute felt valentines for her daughter to give at school.  I’ll show them off tomorrow.  Anyway, the dress is in two parts, a pink jumper with sash and tie straps, and a white ruffled underskirt.  I would have attached them together, but this makes it more versatile and a heck of lot easier to get on.  I had several people compliment it and of course someone made a Bo Peep joke.  Problem came when I accidently spilt hot chocolate on it during Sunday school.  Did you know you are suppose to treat chocolate stains with warm or hot water, not cold?  Got it out instantly.  Don’t believe me?  I took this photo after the incident.  It works.
Here’s the updated list:
  • Case
  • Skirt
  • Pink Dress
  • Cat dress
  • Altered t-shirt
  • kit
  • bunka doll
Three down, four to go.  The next one’s going to be so cute.

Florals and B-day Surprise

Finished a couple from the list, and working like mad to finished the next one.  Ended up staying up till 2am cutting and sewing, probably shouldn’t do that too often.  Anyway, here’s the finished stuff so far.

PICT0006

I made a case for my cell phone a while ago, but that one was just too bulky.  I needed one that was more streamline and still pretty.  For this one, I used two different scraps of fleece to make sort of a sleeve to slide the phone into easily.  Fairly basic, the floral print on the fleece was lovely, only needed some lace around the the top and along the sides to make it perfect.  For some reason it kind of reminds me of a thimble.  Wouldn’t that be cute?  Lacy floral print thimbles.  Something to think about.

Today happens to be my niece’s birthday, she’s seven today.  Despite her mother’s opinions, my niece really loves all those skirts and dresses I’ve been making, so I thought it would be good to make something for her to match.   I used some leftover fabric from the last dress (see Late on the Hearts and Sunshine) to make this cute skirt.  I also made a matching headband, but it was impossible to get a decent photo of it.  She loved them both so much that she wants to wear them for picture day.  All she needs is a cute top to match the skirt.  Hmmm.

Here’s the updated list:

  • Case
  • Skirt
  • Pink Dress
  • Cat dress
  • Altered t-shirt
  • kit
  • bunka doll

Two down, five to go.  The rest will be easy.

Here’s an Alternative

The forums at etsy have changed, many would say that it isn’t for the better.  Either way, it seems to be permanent, so what do you do if still long for the old days?  Try this.

Unofficial Etsy Forums, a new sort of substitute for the etsy forums now that they have “changed”.  A lot of what you loved before with some tweaks.  Etsians rejoice.

Just a Couple of Updates

bathingwinnersbFirst off, anyone notice the new poll on the left side of my blog?  I have been wondering if I should change my blog’s appearance for several months, so I’m leaving the decision up to all of you.

Second, I’m assuming everyone here from Etsy has heard about what happened to the forums over there.  It got me thinking about how my forum site is set up.  So I made a change, all the forums at Crafting Up (except the announcements one) are set to allow anyone to post/reply, whether they are a registered member or not.  I think forums should be open to anyone with an idea or opinion, not just a few who join a group.  I just wish more people felt that way.

Up to Fifteen

reqdaycherries007I drafted up my new project list.  Just like the last one, it’s short and sweet since I am still going to be pretty busy the next few weeks.  The move has been postponed, but I still need to pack.  Plus we’re extremely busy at the tax office right now, and we will get super busy after the 15th.  That’s when the IRS will start accepting and processing returns for people who itemize and have education credits and other stuff like that.  Anyway, here’s the list:

Craft project list #15

  • Case
  • Skirt
  • Pink Dress
  • Cat dress
  • Altered t-shirt
  • kit
  • bunka doll

I should have it all done three weeks from now.  I hope.
